Why AI detectors flag your essay.
AI detectors don't understand your argument, check your citations, or judge your ideas. They read statistics. Once you know which statistics, a lot of confusing detector behavior — including flagging text you genuinely wrote — starts to make sense.
What detectors actually measure
Most detection systems lean on two families of signal. Perplexity asks: how predictable is each next word, according to a language model? Machine-generated text is, by construction, made of high-probability word choices, so it scores as unusually predictable. Burstiness asks: how much does that predictability vary across sentences? Humans write in bursts — a long winding sentence, then a short one, a plain phrase next to an odd one. Models keep an even keel.
Newer classifiers are trained end-to-end on millions of human and machine samples and pick up subtler fingerprints: stock transitions (“moreover,” “furthermore”), uniformly hedged claims, lists that always come in threes, paragraphs that all breathe at the same pace. No single tell decides it; the verdict is an accumulation.
Why academic prose is especially exposed
Here is the uncomfortable part for scholars: disciplined academic writing shares features with machine output. It favors conventional transitions, controlled sentence length, standardized hedging, and formulaic section rhetoric — exactly the regularities detectors read as machine-like. This is why non-native English writers and careful revisers get false-flagged more often: revision toward “correctness” is revision toward predictability.
What doesn't help
- Synonym swapping. Replacing words one-for-one leaves sentence rhythm and structure — the main signals — untouched, and often damages precision.
- Adding typos or slang. Detectors are robust to surface noise, and you've made the text worse.
- Asking the model to “write more naturally.” It generates from the same distribution; the fingerprint stays.
What actually reads human
Text reads human when its statistics look human: varied sentence lengths, transitions that occasionally surprise, emphasis that falls in personal places, a rhythm that speeds up and slows down. In practice that means real rewriting at the sentence level — not decorating the old sentences, but re-saying them the way a particular person would.
